When you think of someone who is dedicated, experienced and loves their community, Martin Galea, Director of Tick Box Conveyancing is the first person that comes to mind. With over 40 years of conveyancing experience, Martin has built a reputation for excellence not just in his field but as a proud member of the Moonee Valley community.

Martin was interviewed on the Moonee Valley Voices Podcast about his connection to the Moonee Valley and the broader Real Estate community, both in our home base of Moonee Ponds and beyond.

Starting in Moonee Valley

For Martin setting up shop in Moonee Valley was a no-brainer. Years ago he moved to the area and fell in love with it. “I didn’t want my practice to be too far from home,” Martin says. “The people here are great, the parks, restaurants and sense of community – it just felt right.”

Before setting up Tick Box Conveyancing Martin had a successful practice in Flemington. His connection to Moonee Valley was further strengthened when he got involved in local sports, coaching football and building community connections. “Living and working here has been a great balance. The community values good service and it’s been great to deliver that.”

Tick Box Conveyancing is the culmination of Martin’s lifelong interest in property law. The firm offers a full range of conveyancing services from residential transactions to complex commercial deals. “We’ve built our business on trust, professionalism and doing what’s best for our clients,” he says.

Martin attributes much of his success to the relationships he’s built over the years. “The real estate agents, mortgage brokers, accountants and financial planners in Moonee Valley are some of the best professionals I’ve worked with. There’s a common goal of delivering good service.”

Despite 40 years of experience, Martin’s enthusiasm hasn’t worn off. “I love what I do just as much as I did when I started,” he says. “Helping people through one of the biggest transactions of their lives is very rewarding.”

A Conveyancing Pioneer

Martin has achieved many milestones throughout his career. In 1986 he set up his first practice M.G. Conveyancing at a time when non-lawyer conveyancers were few and far between. He was a key player in shaping the industry, working with organisations like the Australian Institute of Conveyancers and developing the conveyancing diploma at RMIT.

One of Martin’s most interesting roles was as a statutory manager appointed by Consumer Affairs Victoria. He was tasked with cleaning up a conveyancing practice that had misappropriated client funds. Martin’s work ensured clients were compensated. “It was an honour to represent the industry and to get clients back what was theirs. It reinforced the importance of integrity in our work.”

Change is Good

In his 40 years, Martin has seen the industry change a lot. GST and electronic settlements are the two biggest. “PEXA has changed the way we work,” Martin says. “No more racing into the city with bank cheques. It’s more efficient and we can focus on delivering good service.”

Martin also notes the challenges of protecting client money and cybercrime. “We deal with client money every day so we must be on our toes. Education and professionalism are the key to staying ahead.”

Conveyancing, Community and Sport

Outside of conveyancing Martin has been involved in local sport, coaching at clubs like Essendon Royals. For him sport isn’t just about competition it’s about character building and lifelong friendships. “Clubs provide a safe space for juniors and parents to connect with their community,” Martin says. “It’s great to see the impact these organisations have.”

His time as a coach has also influenced his leadership style. “Coaching taught me to identify people’s strengths and help them grow. Whether it’s on the field or in business it’s about building confidence and teamwork.”

Tips for New Business Owners

As someone who has run several businesses Martin’s advice is simple and practical: “Work hard and invest time and money. Focus on good service and the results will follow.”

Networking formal and informal has also been key to Martin’s success. “Building relationships with real estate agents and mortgage brokers is crucial,” he says. “It’s about trust and respect and that benefits the client.”
